TOPIC
DISCUSSION TCP/IP Connection provides the software to connect a Macintosh personal computer to a TCP/IP network and to manage the Macintosh from a console using the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). The product includes: * A TCP/IP protocol implementation (MacTCP) * SNMP network management software * Data-link drivers for Ethernet, LocalTalk, and Token Ring * A Domain Name Resolver * Support for Hosts files * A ping test application (MacTCP Ping). TCP/IP Connection is the source for the latest version of the TCP/IP networking protocols for the Macintosh computer. It provides the standard interface for all Macintosh-based TCP/IP network applications such as FTP, Telnet, NFS, and others. The product also provides driver software for Apple's LocalTalk, Ethernet, and Token Ring data links. The MacTCP configuration tools give the network administrator the choice of controlling all configuration or assigning various levels of configuration authority to users. Available through all Apple retail channels, TCP/IP Connection can be purchased as a single-user package. Volume licensing is available through a user license extension as well as through Apple's volume-licensing program, both of which offer an economical option for large organizations. Apple also offers TCP/IP Administration for the Macintosh computer, a product that provides comprehensive documentation and utilities for centralized configuration of the TCP/IP and SNMP software. TCP/IP Connection Features -------------------------- SNMP Network Management * Allows Macintosh personal computers to fit into existing SNMP management systems. * Provides remote network and system management of Macintosh computers over a TCP/IP network. * Allows access to SNMP management information over both TCP/IP and AppleTalk protocols when combined with the AppleTalk Connection product for the Macintosh computer. Standard API * Provides a single, standard interface for all TCP/IP applications on the Macintosh. Concurrent TCP/IP and AppleTalk services * Supports multiple concurrent TCP/IP services. * Supports concurrent use of TCP/IP and AppleTalk services. (For example, users can connect to TCP/IP services while printing to an AppleTalk network printer.) Security and Control * Administrators, using the TCP/IP Administration Kit, can preconfigure and lock both the TCP/IP and SNMP software. |
