    During installation of Mac OS X Server, a number of devices are probed and initialized. Booting in verbose mode (-v argument) allows you to watch the initialization process as Mach/BSD initializes the system.

DISCUSSION

    To aid in following the flow, and to better understand Open Firmware designations, here is a short list of some of the more important devices:
    scX
    		SCSI Controller Typically, sc0 and sc1
    sdX(y)
    		SCSI Device (partition) X = integer, y = alphabetic partition number, ie, sd0
    hcX
    		hardware (IDE) controller usually hc0
    hdX(y)
    		IDE Device (partition) X = integer, y = alphabetic partition number, ie, hd0
    enX
    		ethernet interface usually en0 or en1

    There are many other Mach/BSD device types. These few represent the ones you are most likely to need to know.
