    This article contains a number of questions that have come up frequently on the Performa discussion board in the Tech Exchange area at the Apple Support site.

    1. Can I use EDO memory with my computer?

    2. I just installed Mac OS 8 and now there appears to be a significant delay on startup. I press the power button and the computer gives a startup chime, however, the power light and monitor do not come on for another 30 seconds or so. It was not doing this before Mac OS 8. How can I fix this?
    This issue is addressed in Mac OS 8.1. The Mac OS 8.1 Update is available from the Apple Software Updates site.


    3. Every time I start-up my Macintosh computer after it has been powered off, it switches to black and white mode, changes the desktop pattern, the date reverts to 1956, forgets my printer settings, Chooser settings, or time. What could be causing this issue?

    The Performa 6400 series computers come with either a Global Village Teleport Platinum V modem or a Geoport modem. The following article should help you identify which modem came with your computer.

    8. I have a Performa computer with an internal modem. Can I use a modem on the external modem port? If so, how do I do this?
    Yes, you can add an external modem to the modem port, however, the internal modem must first be removed. See the following article for more information: You will also need to remove your modem software and use the software that comes with your new modem. The following articles describe how you can remove the modem software depending on which modem you have:

    9. I would like to upgrade my internal modem to a 56K internal modem. Does Apple offer such an upgrade?

    10. My internal or external Apple Geoport/Telecom modem no longer works after installing Mac OS 8.x.
    Check your Extensions Manager control panel and verify the Express Modem control panel and any Geoport extensions are active.

    You may need to install Apple Telecom software from the Apple Extras folder of a Mac OS 8 or 8.1 CD-ROM disc. If such a CD-ROM disc is not available, Apple Telecom 3.1.3 may be downloaded from the Apple Software Updates http://asu.info.apple.com/ .


    11. I installed a new, larger hard drive (IDE, EIDE, or SCSI) and it does not seem to work. I reformatted it with Apple Drive Setup software but that did not help.

    Drive Setup is intended for use only on Apple factory-installed hard drives. It may work with other drives, but is not tested or supported. Unexpected errors or data loss may occur with such an unsupported configuration.

    You may need to use compatible third party hard disk formatting software. Check with the hard drive manufacturer for a recommendation.

    Also, depending on the model of Macintosh Performa you have, you may need to partition the hard drive into 4GB or 2GB sized volumes.

    12. My web browser crashes or freezes a lot.
    Although a number of factors may be contributing to such behavior, in general the following suggestions should help:

    - Allocate more RAM to the web browser. See the following article for assistance. - Remove or clear the web browser's cache folder and preference file.
    - Run a hard drive utility such as Disk First Aid.
    - Remove and reinstall the web browser software (be sure it is a compatible version).

    If the web browser did not come with your system software or Mac OS, please contact the manufacturer of your web browser for further assistance.
