TOPIC

What resolutions are supported during DVD-Video playback?

DISCUSSION

All resolutions available through the Monitors and Sound control panel are supported in DVD video playback. DVD does not draw to the desktop, instead it uses zoomed video to present the image in a special on screen window. It presents a 720 x 480 image at millions of colors. The total VRAM available to the computer gets split between the desktop and the DVD presentation window. Accordingly, the higher the resolution set in Monitors & Sound, the less free VRAM is available for DVD.

In an extreme case the DVD window will start presenting fields instead of frames to reduce the amount of VRAM needed. The effect of this is to make it look like you are watching through venetian blinds. Reducing the number of colors in the Monitors and Sound control panel should restore full video.
