Mac OS X: Issues When Opening Multiple Applications

Opening multiple applications in rapid succession may lead to a situation in which the applications open only partially, into an unresponsive state. The Finder may not respond.

Symptom

One or more of the following may occur:

A spinning disc pointer appears and does not change back to an arrow.
The icon of one or more of the affected applications continues to bounce in the Dock.
If a bouncing icon is selected in the Dock, an alert with the message "Application Not Responding" appears.
The Finder does not seem to respond or does not appear after login.

Solution

Update to Mac OS X 10.1.2 or later. Use the Software Update pane of System Preferences, or download the update from Apple Software Downloads (http://www.apple.com/swupdates/).
