Mac OS X 10.2: Startup Graphics Do Not Appear Correctly When Multiple Versions Are Installed

The graphics normally seen during the first portion of Mac OS X 10.2 startup are not drawn and animated correctly when multiple versions of Mac OS X are installed.
Symptom

When you start up Mac OS X 10.2, a gray screen appears that includes the Apple logo and an animated graphic. The animated graphic on this screen is not drawn and animated correctly. This condition may sometimes be referred to as a "corrupted graphic."

Solution

If multiple version of Mac OS X are installed on an affected computer, the startup graphic is not drawn and animated correctly. This would happen, for example, if you installed Mac OS X versions 10.1.5 and 10.2 on two separate partitions on the same computer.

On the affected computers listed above, you should not install different versions of Mac OS X on different partitions or disks.
