Symptom
- Third-party menu bar items do not appear after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.2.
- If you try to open the preference pane for a third-party menu bar item, an alert box may appear. Using Application Switcher Menu (Frank Vercruesse, author) as an example, the message in the alert box says:
"Preferences Error. Could not load ASM."
Solution
Mac OS X 10.2, in its original and supported state, does not allow the addition of third-party menu bar items.
Important: Though third-party solutions exist for re-enabling third-party menu bar items, Apple does not recommend, endorse, or provide technical support for use of such solutions or for complications arising from the use of such solutions. Using third-party solutions to modify Mac OS X may result in unforeseen consequences, including but not limited to the inability to install future Apple software updates.
