Application and folder names unexpectedly change to English (Mac OS X)

When English is not selected as the preferred language, selecting the Finder preference for "Always show file extensions" causes Mac OS X-installed applications and folders to revert to their English names.

Note: This document applies to Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.9.

Symptom

Applications and folder names that formerly appeared in a localized, non-English language change back to English.

Solution

Deselect the Finder preference for "Always show file extensions." Follow these steps:

1. Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
2. Choose Preferences from the Finder menu.
3. Deselect the checkbox for "Always show file extensions."
