Mac OS X: Cannot Use Floppy Disk When Formatted as Mac OS Extended (HFS Plus) via Disk Utility

Symptom

A floppy disk is no longer recognized. If you use Console, it reports:

"/sbin/newfs_hfs: /dev/rdisk2s2: partition is too small (minimum is 4 MB)"

Solution

Floppy disks are too small to allow Mac OS Extended format, which requires at least a 4 MB disk. To correct the issue, reformat the disk as Mac OS Standard, Unix File System, or MS-DOS File System.
