Mac OS X 10.2: Sleep Is Delayed When You Close a PowerBook or iBook

If certain applications are open, there may be a delay of up to 30 seconds before your PowerBook or iBook goes to sleep after closing it.
Symptom

A PowerBook or iBook using Mac OS X 10.2 does not go to sleep immediately when you close it.

Solution

Some applications may not respond immediately to system sleep notifications in Mac OS X 10.2. These applications should respond within several seconds, allowing the computer to go to sleep. However, this may cause a delay of up to 30 seconds after the computer is closed.

To avoid this delay, quit any such application before closing the computer. You may need to use a process of trial and observation to determine which applications cause a sleep delay.
