Mac OS X Server 10.2: NetBoot Clients Get "Error -36" When Connecting to Server

If the source volume of the NetBoot image did not have privileges enabled, NetBoot clients get an "Error -36" alert message when trying to connect to an Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) server.

Note: Apple File Service, AppleShare, File Sharing, and Personal File Sharing are all examples of AFP service.
Symptom

A NetBoot client displays an "Error -36" alert message when trying to connect to an AFP volume.

Solution

Privileges should be enabled on the source volume prior to making a NetBoot image. To repair file permissions on an existing image, use the Repair Privileges feature of Disk Utility.

For more information, including steps on how to enable permissions, see technical document 107524, "Mac OS X Server 10.2: NetBoot or Network Installation Image Does Not Work Properly if Permissions Not Enabled on Source".
