Mac OS X 10.2: "...System Folder has been modified by a newer version of Classic..." Alert

When you open the Classic environment for the first time after performing an Archive and Install installation, an alert message may appear. This happens because the Mac OS 9 System Folder contains Classic components updated by the later version of Mac OS X.

Symptom

This message appears the first time Classic opens after an Archive and Install installation:

Note: If you click Try Anyway, this message will not appear again.

This happens when the version of Mac OS X 10.2 that is currently installed is earlier than the version previously installed.

Solution

Update to the version of Mac OS X you were using before the Archive and Install, or later.

Alternatively, or if you do not plan to update to the same or later Mac OS X version, you can reinstall Mac OS 9. Refer to these technical documents for more information, depending on what type of Mac OS 9 install or Mac OS X Restore disc you have:
