Mac OS X 10.3: Cannot Deselect Kotoeri Input in International Preferences

If there are third-party input methods installed, Kotoeri-related items may still appear in the input menu even if you deselect Kotoeri in International preferences.
This issue can occur after each restart. To avoid this, follow these steps one time:

  1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
  2. From the View menu, choose International.
  3. Select any third-party Japanese input methods, such as ATOK, from the list of keyboard layouts, input methods, and palettes.
  4. Close International preferences.
  5. From the Input menu (generally looks like a flag in the menu bar), choose the third-party input methods.
  6. From the Input menu, choose Open International.
  7. Deselect Kotoeri in the list of keyboard layouts, input methods, and palettes
