Symptom
- You can't install Security Update 2003-11-04.
- Software Update stops installing during the "Expanding and verifying" or "Now checking local disks" stages.
- A "bus error" message may appear if installing via Terminal.
This can happen when:
- An application besides Terminal is installed whose name contains "Terminal".
- You are installing via Software Update, a downloaded installer, or Terminal.
Solution
- Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
- From the File menu, choose Find. The Find window appears.
- From the "Search in" pop-up menu, choose "Local disks".
- Choose the items in the first and second rows of pop-up menus as illustrated in Figure 1.

- Type "Terminal" in the empty text box.
- Click Search.
- Rename any applications that are found, except for the application named Terminal, so that the word "Terminal" is not part of their filenames.
For example, if you find an application named "MyTerminal," rename it to something like "MyTerm" by clicking its filename to select it, typing a new filename, and pressing Return.
Note: Do not rename preference files or other files whose filenames contain "Terminal" and whose Kind is not application.
- Download and install Security Update 2003-11-04 again. It is available from Software Update preferences or from Apple Featured Software.
