Mac OS X 10.3: How to rename Finder Sidebar items

Learn how to rename items in the Mac OS X Panther Sidebar.
Note: Some items can't be renamed, such as read-only media (optical discs), network volumes, or any item whose permissions or ownership does not permit changes by the current user.

To rename a volume or folder in the Sidebar
  1. Select the item in the Sidebar.
  2. From the File menu, choose Get Info.
  3. Click the triangle next to "Name & Extension:".
  4. Rename the item.
  5. Press the Tab key or close the Info window.


To rename an application or document
  1. Locate the item in the Finder (not in the Sidebar).
  2. Select the item.
  3. Press the Return key to make the name editable.
  4. Rename the item.
  5. Press the Return key to complete the change.
