Mac OS X 10.3: Receiving faxes and connecting to the Internet

If your computer has a built-in USB modem and you use it to connect to the Internet, selecting the "Receive faxes on this computer" option in Print & Fax preferences may keep the computer from connecting to the Internet more than once, unless you restart.
The modem menu bar item may say the modem is "disconnecting." The Internet Connect Connection Log may say "Connect script failed."

To fix this, follow these easy steps.
  1. From the Apple menu, choose Restart. The computer restarts.
  2. Log in, if necessary.
  3. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
  4. From the View menu, choose Print & Fax.
  5. Deselect "Receive faxes on this computer".

Now you can connect more than one time without restarting the computer.

But what if I want to receive faxes?

Follow the steps above, but enable "Receive faxes on this computer" in the last step. Remember to deselect the option if you need to connect to the Internet more than one time before you restart or shut down.
