iMovie may not import protected AAC content correctly

If you purchase a song from the iTunes Store and want to use it in iMovie, you may find that the song previews fine in the iMovie Audio pane, but does not play once you drag the file to the timeline. If you run into this issue, read on for some things to check. After doing each step, test your iMovie project to see if the song plays.

  1. Make sure that iTunes, iMovie, and QuickTime are up to date.
  2. Quit iMovie and make sure the audio track you are trying to import plays correctly in iTunes. If it does, try reimporting the track into your iMovie project again.
  3. If you installed third-party QuickTime plug-ins, try disabling them (click here for instructions on how to disable QuickTime plug-ins).
  4. If you installed third-party iMovie plug-ins, try disabling them (find steps to remove iMovie plug-ins here).
  5. Try recreating the iTunes Music Library.xml file as described here.
