When you burn a DVD in iDVD, some operations may not be displayed in the progress bar during the process. Sometimes the progress bar doesn't indicate specifically what process is taking place or how long it has to go, which can make it appear as if the process has stopped.
You may notice this more when iDVD is encoding audio or multiplexing, where the progress window may display a "Writing Lead-in" message for a long time (from 5–10 minutes, depending on your content, which can seem like an eternity when you're anticipating that first DVD screening). Don't worry. iDVD is still hard at work—it just won't give you every detail of its progress.
