If you use GarageBand 2 with ReWire, the ReWire connection will get disconnected if you hot swap the audio interface. Although GarageBand supports hot swapping audio interfaces, ReWire does not. If you're using ReWire to slave another application to GarageBand, avoid hot swapping audio devices.
If you do lose the connection, just quit the ReWire slave application and then reopen it.
