In the Audio/MIDI pane of GarageBand preferences, the menu for selecting outputs lists inputs.
This happens when using GarageBand 3 on an Intel-based iMac computer.
To work around the issue, select the "input" that corresponds to the output hardware you want to use. For example, to use the Built-in Line Out, set the output field to Built-in Line In.
