Mac OS X Server: Share Points in the Administrator‘s Desktop Folder are Not Accessible by FTP or SMB Clients

Share points created in the administrator's Desktop Folder are not accessible by FTP or SMB clients.
Symptom

When an administrator creates a share point in the Desktop Folder, an FTP or SMB client cannot access it. FTP clients will see a "Permission denied" alert message when trying to access it. Microsoft Windows users will see a message indicating that the network name cannot be found.

Note: Users accessing the same share point over AFP are not affected.


Solution

Move the share point into the Shared Items folder located at the top (root) level of the startup disk.
