Mac OS: Cannot Copy a File Because It Is in Use

This article explains how to workaround instances when the Finder cannot copy a file because the "file is currently in use."
Symptom

While trying to copy a file from one disk or volume to another, an alert box appears with a message that the file cannot be copied or opened because it is currently in use.


Solution

The Finder normally cannot copy a file that is already open by another application, or is in use by the operating system. To copy the item, try the following:
