iBook, Mac OS X 10.3: Cannot Calibrate Display

You may find your iBook display does not calibrate if you are running Mac OS X 10.3 or Mac OS X 10.3.1.
Symptom

The display contrast may be high on some early iBook computers when running Mac OS X 10.3 or 10.3.1 or when started up from the Mac OS X 10.3 Install CD. The display could be described as looking "washed out" or the text as looking "blocky" (not smoothed).

Only "Generic RGB Profile" and "sRGB Profile" appear in Display preferences. When you click Calibrate, this message appears: "Can not calibrate the display. The factory profile for the display could not be found."

Solution

Update to Mac OS X 10.3.2 or later.
