Mac OS X Server 1.x: How To Configure HFS Volume After Startup

This article is about configuring a HFS volume after Startup.
Note: This article pertains to Mac OS X Server versions 1.x, which were released prior to May 2001.

Symptom:

I have an external disk, with an HFS partition When I boot Mac OS X Server with this drive connected, Mac OS X Server mounts it. Then I can use "unmount" to remove it, and "mount" to remount it.

If I boot Mac OS X without this disk connected to the SCSI chain, and connect it after Mac OS X Server loads, "mount" does not work to manipulate the drive. I get the error: "Device not configured".

How do I configure a Mac HFS formatted drive after Mac OS X Server boots?

Solution:

At this time drives added to the SCSI chain after the boot process are not recognized.
