Mac OS X 10.0, Mac OS X Server 10.0: Cannot Format Volumes Larger Than 1 Terabyte

You cannot format a volume that is larger than 1 terabyte with Mac OS X 10.0 or Mac OS X Server 10.0. Use volumes that are smaller than 1 terabyte.

Symptom

Attempting to format a volume larger than 1 terabyte fails. An alert box appears with a message stating:

"Error - volume size is too big"

Solution

Use volumes that are less than 1 terabyte in size.

If you are using a hardware RAID, set it up to present several volumes, with each volume being smaller than 1 terabyte.
