Mac OS X 10.2: Cannot Deselect Kotoeri Input in International Preferences

If there are third-party input methods installed, Kotoeri-related items may still appear in the input menu even after deselecting Kotoeri in International preferences. This document applies to Mac OS X 10.2.4 through 10.2.8.
To fix this, follow these steps. You may need to do this after each start up.

  1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
  2. From the View menu, choose International.
  3. Select any third-party Japanese input methods, such as ATOK, from the list of keyboard layouts, input methods, and palettes.
  4. Close International preferences.
  5. From the Input menu (generally looks like a flag in the menu bar), choose the third-party input methods.
  6. From the Input menu, choose Open International.
  7. Deselect Kotoeri in the list of keyboard layouts, input methods, and palettes.
