TOPIC ---------------------------------------------
Regarding DDP-IP functionality, is it true that MacTCP can send TCP/IP data
embedded in AppleTalk packets (necessitating use of the DDP-IP gateway)?
Can MacTCP direct TCP/IP packets directly on to an Ethernet (without a
DDP-IP gateway)? Can K-Talk do this?
DISCUSSION ---------------------------------------------
Yes, this is a fair representation of the functionality provided by MacTCP.
When you are on a LocalTalk-based network, the TCP/IP packets are
encapsulated within AppleTalk packets. When you are on an Ethernet, MacTCP
uses TCP/IP directly without the encapsulation.
K-Talk does not provide quite the same capability. The best way to
understand K-Talk is that it is software that resides on a UNIX host and
provides AppleTalk services for AppleTalk clients (usually Macintoshes).
