Mac OS X: Keys Used in Spoken User Interface Lose Original Functions

If you choose a single key to speak selected text in the Speech pane of System Preferences, that key loses its original function and will only read selected text.
Symptom

When you press a key, you hear an alert sound or some spoken text, but the function you expected the key to perform does not occur.


Keys affected in this manner when used singly:
Solution

Choose a key combination instead of a single key in the Spoken User Interface tab of the Speech pane in System Preferences.

Note: Be careful not to use existing key combinations as these will also lose their original functions. Examples of existing key combinations are Command-S for Save and Command-P for Print.
