Apple RAID 1.5: Using Third-Party Software to Initialize Volume (7/97)

I have an Apple RAID 1.5 volume I want to initialize using another companies' software. However the computer crashes when I try to do so. It does not matter if the drives are mounted or not, it still crashes. How can I initialize the volume?
This is a limitation of RAID. The crash itself is the third-party software not handling the "cannot format part of a volume group" situation appropriately.

The Apple Raid 1.5 manual states that you need to delete the RAID volumes before you try to take them over with other drivers.

Recovery Method

1) Restart the computer

2) Launch Apple RAID.

3) From the volume list, delete the RAID volumes associated with the drive you wish to initialize.

4) Restart the computer

Now you can initialize the volume using the other drive software.
