Workgroup Server 9650: Addendum to Setting Up Your Workgroup Server 9650 Manual

This article is the addendum to the Setting Up Your Workgroup Server 9650 manual.
Introduction
This addendum to the Setting Up Your Workgroup Server 9650 manual contains setup information and technical specifications for the following parts of your Workgroup Server 9650:
Your server at a glance
The following figure shows the basic components of your Workgroup Server 9650 assembled and connected to a network.

The ports on the back of the Workgroup Server 9650 and the icons that identify them are shown in the following figure. During setup, you'll connect hardware to some of these ports.

Your server's ports and connectors
SCSI-1 port (DB-25)Connects your server to SCSI equipment such as external hard disk drives.
Ethernet port (AAUI)Connects your server to an Ethernet network using an AAUI adapter.
Ethernet port (10BaseT)Connects your server to an Ethernet network using an RJ-45 connector
Ethernet port (10/100BaseT)Connects your server to an Ethernet network using an RJ-45 connector
Printer port (GeoPort)Connects your server to a printer, LocalTalk network, GeoPort adapter, or serial device.
Modem port (GeoPort)Connects your server to an external modem, LocalTalk network, GeoPort adapter, or serial device.

Your server's ports and connectors
Apple Desktop Bus (ADB) portConnects your server to an input device, such as a keyboard or a trackball.
Sound input portConnects your server to an Apple PlainTalk microphone or other audio input
equipment.
Apple monitor portConnects your server to an Apple monitor. This port is on a video card installed in one
of the PCI slots.
VGA monitor portConnects your server to a VGA monitor. This port is on a video card installed in one of
the PCI slots.
68-pin SCSI portConnects your server to Ultra Wide SCSI-3 equipment such as external hard disk
drives. This port is on a SCSI card installed in one of the PCI slots. Normally you should
not use this port; for more information, see Chapter 4 of your setup manual.
Sound output portConnects your server to headphones, externally powered (amplified) speakers, or other
audio output equipment.
Access covers for PCI expansion slots (6)Your server supports up to six Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) expansion cards. (The monitor, SCSI, and Ethernet cards are installed in three of the slots.)
Security lock port and lockable cover latchYou can attach a security lock to your server and to its cover to secure internal components. See your computer products retailer for security lock devices that work with your server.

Connecting a VGA monitor
This information supplements Chapter 1 in the Setting Up Your Workgroup Server 9650 manual.

1. Connect the monitor power cord. Follow the instructions on page 21 in the Setting Up Your Workgroup Server 9650 manual.

2. Attach the monitor cable to the monitor. On some monitors, the cable is already attached.

3. Attach the monitor cable to the VGA monitor port on the back panel of the server. The VGA monitor port is located next to the Apple monitor port. See the illustration in the previous section, Your Server at a Glance.

Warning: You cannot connect monitors to the VGA port and the Apple monitor port at the same time. Connecting two monitors degrades performance and may cause electromagnetic emissions that interfere with the performance of nearby electronic devices, such as a television or radio. If you want to connect two monitors to your server, you must purchase an additional monitor card. See Connecting Multiple Monitors on page 113 in the Setting Up Your Workgroup Server 9650 manual.

Connecting to a 100BaseT Ethernet network
This information supplements Chapter 2 in the Setting Up Your Workgroup Server 9650 manual.

Note: Although you can simultaneously connect cables to the built-in AAUI and 10BaseT ports as well as the 10/100BaseT Ethernet port, you can use only one of these Ethernet connections at a time.

1. Make sure that the server is turned off.

2. Plug one end of the twisted-pair cable into an RJ-45 wall outlet that supports 100BaseT Ethernet. You must use Category 5 unshielded twisted-pair cable.

3. Plug the other end of the twisted-pair cable into the 100BaseT Ethernet port on the server.

4. Configure your network connection. You need to change the default port in the AppleTalk control panel from Ethernet built-in to Ethernet slot D2. Instructions for changing the default port are in Chapter 4 of your Workgroup Server Administrator's Manual.

Technical information
The following specifications replace the specifications in Appendix B of Setting Up Your Workgroup Server 9650.

Main unit

Processor card
A PowerPC TM 604e processor with the following features:

  • 350 megahertz (MHz) processor clock
  • built-in floating point unit (FPU) and 64 kilobytes (K) level 1 cache
  • 1 MB Apple Inline Cache (level 2)
  • 50 MHz system bus
  • 100 MHz cache bus

    Memory

  • 64 MB of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), supplied in removable Dual Inline Memory Modules (DIMMs), expandable to a maximum of 768 MB
  • 4 MB of synchronous graphics RAM (SGRAM) on the monitor (video)card
  • 4 MB of read-only memory (ROM)
  • 32 K of nonvolatile parameter memory
  • 1 MB of static random-access memory (SRAM) used as an Apple Inline Cache. (The cache size is not expandable because the RAM is soldered to the processor card.)

    Monitor card
The monitor card is the Xclaim TM 3D PCI card from ATI. It has a high performance 64-bit graphics accelerator with support for 2D, motion video, and 3D.

Note: You must install the ATI drivers provided on your Mac OS CD-ROM if you want to use the full capabilities of your monitor card.

The card includes 4 MB of synchronous graphics RAM (SGRAM); it can be upgraded to 6 or 8 MB SGRAM. The card has two connectors that let you connect it either to an Apple monitor or to a VGA monitor. You cannot connect two monitors to this card at the same time.

Note: Your server must be connected to a monitor; it cannot be operated without one.

You can use most multiple-scan (multisynchronous) monitors with the monitor card. On some monitors from manufacturers other than Apple, the connector pinout designates one pin for both green video and timing synchronization. Multiple-scan sync on green monitors are not compatible with your monitor card, but VGA sync on green monitors are compatible. If you're not sure what type of monitor you have, check with your dealer.

You use the Monitors & Sound control panel or the Control Strip to set a video mode that is supported by both your monitor and the monitor card. The monitor card supports the resolutions and color depths listed in the 2D and 3D Mode tables that follow.

    2D Mode table

To find out how much memory is available for 3D acceleration, subtract the Memory Used for Display from the number of kilobytes of SGRAM on your video card.
