Virex: Installation Steps

This article discusses how to install Virex 7.x.
To install Virex software:

If your copy of Virex came on a CD, insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive.

If you downloaded your copy of Virex, the compressed file should decompress automatically to display a package icon.

Double-click the package icon.

The Virex Installer window appears.

Installing Virex

Follow the instructions in the window.

When the Installer has finished copying files to your hard disk, it notifies you with a dialog box.

Virex is configured to scan your Home folder after you log in. This feature is activated when you first launch Virex. The Home folder is
scanned the next time you log in and continues to do so as long as the option is enabled in the Virex preferences.

Testing Your Installation

You can test Virex by using the EICAR Standard Anti-Virus Test File.

This file is a combined effort by anti-virus vendors throughout the world to implement one standard by which customers can verify their anti-virus software.

To test your installation:

Copy the following line into its own file, then save the file with the name

EICAR.COM.X5O!P%@AP[4\\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

The file size will be 68 or 70 bytes. Note that the third character is a capital O and not a zero. The text must all be on one line.

Start Virex and allow it to scan the folder that contains EICAR.COM.

When Virex scans this file, it will report finding the EICAR test file.

NOTE: This file is not a virus. Delete the file when you have finished testing to avoid alarming unsuspecting users.

You can also obtain a copy of the EICAR.COM file from the EICAR web site http://www.eicar.com.
