MacDraw II: Printing to QuickDraw Printers

Most non-Postscript printers (including all ImageWriters, the LaserWriter IISC and the GCC PLP) will print MacDraw II rotated text at very poor quality. This is true even when printing in Best quality mode. (This problem refers to 1.0v4 through 1.1v2, the current version).

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
Rotated text print quality is greatly improved by using the MacDraw II Configure utility program. This program increases the printing resolution to non-postscript printers. For details, see the related record in this file regarding MacDraw II Configure. In addition, turning off Fractional Character Widths can improve the printing of rotated text.

Additional note: for the best quality, be sure to have the proper font sizes installed. The LaserWriter IISC uses a 4X font size to print text in Best quality. The IW LQ uses a 3X font size to print text in Best quality.

LaserWriter IISC only) The thinnest line width that prints with the LaserWriter II SC is 1 point.

MacDraw II 1.0v4 and later versions created a problem for LW IISC users. When printing text, carriage returns will be arbitrarily added. Currently, the only workaround is to create separate text blocks for each line of text.

According to the Technical Support Department at GCC, the above also applies to ClarisÊCADÊ1.0, and SmartForm Designer. There are, however, no Configure utilities available for these products. The problems with these additional products have not been verified by Claris.
