Claris CAD: "Out of Memory" errors

There are several reasons that Claris CAD may crash or not open files with an "Out of Memory" error.

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
Converting a Claris CAD 1.0 document to version 2.0 v1 may result in an out of memory error due to an incorrect parameter setting in some CAD 1.0 documents. Claris CAD version 2.0v2 corrects this problem.

Claris CAD users frequently have high-end equipment or special monitors which require more memory than a standard Macintosh set-up. Items that require extra memory include large monochrome or gray-scale monitors, color monitors (the most frequent cause of out of memory messages), extra monitors, or having the monitor set to many colors. Since Claris CAD only uses eight colors, having the monitor set to 256 or higher merely wastes memory. Since there is no setting for 8 colors, the optimum setting is 16 colors.

There may also be insufficient memory to open a given file. For example, if a Macintosh has only two megabytes of memory, a color monitor, and you are trying to open and large file while another file is open, there may not be sufficient RAM for Claris CAD to open the file.

Another cause of out of memory errors is related to the amount of memory taken up by the System software. If you have many fonts and desk accessories, these can use up a lot of memory. Certain INIT's, such as those which add color to icons, also use a lot of memory. INIT's or CDEVs that control the system's sounds frequently use a lot of memory. Check the "About the Finder" box to check the total memory versus the system size.

Corrupt documents can also cause out of memory errors. If the program behaves well but won't open a particular file, it may be that the document is corrupt. While it is sometimes possible to recover a corrupt Claris CAD file, the best idea is usually to revert to a back up copy. You can also try translating the file with a utility like the Claris Graphics Translator. Translate the file to another format, then translate it back to Claris CAD .
