ClarisWorks: Opening Text Files in Spreadsheet or Database

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
The Import Options in the Open dialog in the Spreadsheet and Database include the following standard file formats:

* DIF
* SYLK
* ASCII Text (Tab-Delimited)

DIF - used mostly for databases because it retains field names.
SYLK- used mostly for spreadsheets because it retains the formatting information and calculation formulas.
ASCII text - ClarisWorks supports Tab-delimited text. To open other text formats (such as Comma-Separated) you have to convert it to tab-delimited, using the Word Processor.

1. Choose Find/Change from the Edit menu.
2. Click in the Find text field and type a comma.
3. Click in Change text field and type Command-Tab or \\t.
4. Press Change All and then OK to confirm (this changes all commas to tabs).
5. Choose Find/Change from the Edit menu.
6. Click in the Find text field and type a double-quote.
7. Select and delete the text in the Change text field.
8. Press Change All and then OK to confirm (this changes the Quote marks to blanks).

NOTE: This method strips out commas indiscriminately.
