Partitioning a Hard Disk with the Apple IIe Card 2.0 in the Macintosh LC

The IIe Startup Disk mentioned in this article can be downloaded from the Apple Support web site, Apple Software Updates collection.
The Macintosh LC's Apple IIe Card software is only supported by Apple with version 6.0.8 of system software. (However there are no known problems with system 7.0 or 7.01) . If you have a different version of Macintosh system software installed on your hard disk or if you don't use a hard disk at all, you can use the disk labeled "IIe Startup Disk" to run Apple IIe programs. In addition, the ProDOS file system, requires version 6.0.8 of the system software.

The process of creating space for your Apple IIe files is time-consuming, and requires you to erase your hard disk. Also, you cannot store both Apple IIe files and Macintosh files on the same hard disk unless you reserve part of the hard disk for IIe files, i.e. partitioning. Once again, this procedure requires that you erase all information stored on the hard disk. So be sure and back up your hard disk before beginning the partitioning process.

The following procedure describes how to set aside 10 MB for Apple IIe files:

1. Shut down the Macintosh.

2. Insert the IIe Installer Disk into the built-in disk drive.
3. Start up the Macintosh.
4. Open the IIe Installer Disk by double-clicking.
5. Double-click the Apple HD SC Setup icon.
6. Click the Partition button. (A screen appears with all your partitioning options.
7. Click "10 MB ProDOS, Maximum Macintosh," the click OK.
8. A dialog box appears to confirm that you want to erase your hard disk.
9. Click OK.
10. The program takes a few minutes to partition the drive and then asks you to name the new Apple IIe partition. (Remember no more than any combination of 15 numbers and letters.)
11. Type a name and then click OK.
12. Then QUIT.

You now have two icons representing the same hard disk. The new icon, with the symbol for the Apple IIe on it, represents the space reserved for your Apple IIe files. The original icon represents
the rest of the hard disk, which is reserved for Macintosh files.

IMPORTANT:

Drag the BASIC.SYSTEM icon and the PRODOS icon to the new Apple IIe partition.

You can now restore the contents of your hard disk by:

1. Ejecting the IIe Installer disk.
2. Insert one of your backup disks into the disk drive.
3. Copy all the Macintosh files and folders back to the Macintosh partition of the hard disk.
