ClarisWorks: Opening or Inserting Non-ClarisWorks Graphics

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
Issue:
When double-clicking on one of the art files, the file does not open. Instead, an alert appears on screen that says something like "The application that created this file could not be found, is busy or is missing".

Solution:
Double-clicking on a file in the Finder can only open the file in the application that created it. The art files were created in other programs (MacPaint, etc.), so double-clicking on them won't open them into ClarisWorks.
To open these files into a new document, either:
1- Drop-launch the file (drag the file icon onto the ClarisWorks applictication icon), or
2- Launch ClarisWorks, then use the Open command in the file menu to open the file
To open these files into an existing document, use the Insert Command

Issue:
When using the Open command, the Pegasus Art file is not listed in the Open dialog box.

Solution:
(ClarisWorks 1.0): In the Open dialog box, click the Import Options flag so that it points down. Then Click the Drawing button.
(ClarisWorks 2.0): In the Open dialog box, click the Document Type popup menu and select Drawing for the file type.

The Pegasus Art file, and other non-Clarisworks graphics files (MacPaint, TIFF, etc.) should now list in the scroll bar. If not, be sure that you are viewing the correct folder. The folder name is listed in the popup menu above the scroll bar. If you are viewing the proper folder and the graphic files are still not listed in the Open dialog box, try the solutions listed next.

Issue:
When Inserting the Pegasus Art for the tutorial (ClarisWorks Getting Started, Page 6-26), the inserted art takes up the entire screen, covering the fields behind it. The selection handles are not visible on screen, what is happening?

Solution: ClarisWorks is using an old MacPaint filter in your Claris Translators folder. Remove the filter called "MacPaint" and keep the one called "MacPaint 2.0". The Installer does not remove this older filter during the installation process.

FYI: When the inserted art takes up the entire screen, choose "Scale Selection" and reduce the inserted object by 50% - the logo itself is in the upper left corner of a solid large white object, which covers up all the fields in the layout and therefore also in browse. Select the object and choose "Send to Back" under the arrange menu.

Manual Correction: In addition, on page 4-13 of the ClarisWorks Getting Started manual, the Open Document dialog box lists the file "Pegasus Art" and instructs the user to open the file. After step 1, the instructions should tell the user to click on the Import Options flag, then click on the Graphics radio button. "Pegasus Art" will then be listed as an importable file.

Issue:
When Inserting (using the Insert command) the Pegasus Art for the tutorial, the Pegasus Logo file does not show up in the Tutorial folder.

Solution: First make sure the Pegasus Logo file is in the Tutorial folder by opening the folder in the Finder. If the file icon is there, try the following:
1. Locate the file called XTND Translator List and delete it (System 7: it's in the Preferences folder inside the System Folder; System 6: it's in the Claris folder inside the System Folder).
2. Reinstall the translators from the original ClarisWorks disks: Insert the Installer disk; double-click the Installer icon; click the Customize button, choose the translators option, then click Install).
3. An INIT or extension file may be conflicting with ClarisWorks. If your computer is running System 7, hold down the shift key while restarting the computer. This will turn extensions off. Try opening or inserting the file into the ClarisWorks document again. You can use your extensions again by restarting the computer without holding down the shift key.
