Claris Resolve: Creating High-Low, XY and Scatter Charts

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
When High-Low, XY and Scatter charts, multiple columns or rows of data represent a single series. A High-Low chart with six columns of data, for example, would create 2 series. The first series represents the first three columns of data and the last three columns are plotted in the second series. XY and Scatter charts work in a similar manner but only use 2 columns or rows per series.

Rows and columns of data must be contiguous and odd rows or columns are ignored. If you tried to create an XY chart based on 5 columns of data, for example, the 5th column would remain uncharted because it does not complete a pair. Series labels are taken from the top-left cell of each pair (if it contains text). Defining series labels, therefore, must contain 2 or 3 cells for each series even if the 2nd and 3rd cells are blank.

Sometimes the data may not be laid out on the worksheet in a manner that allows the easy creation of this type of chart. You may have three columns of data, for example, that you want to chart in an XY format with the first column the left series in each pair. To create a chart from such data, use the following procedure:

1. Select the first two columns or rows. Claris Resolve defaults to using columns, however, this can be changed by selecting Rows from the pop-up menu in the Chart Options dialog box.
2. Create your chart.
3. Display the series dialog box by double clicking on the series label in the chart legend or selecting the label and choosing Series from the Chart menu.
3. Click the Duplicate button. This will create an exact duplicate of the first series.
4. Bring up the Series dialog box for the duplicate series and change the range, symbol and symbol color.
5. Click OK.
6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 for each series you want to add to the chart.

NOTE: The Data Range field in the Series dialog box will contain either 2 ranges (XY and Scatter charts) or 3 ranges (High-Low). These ranges will be separated by semi-colons. When changing the range information for your duplicate series, you usually only need to change one or two of these ranges. If the layout of your data conforms to the example cited above, you would leave the first series alone and change just the second.
