ClarisWorks: Multi-launching Claris Applications on a Server

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
A Claris product can be installed on a server and legally launched by multiple users as long as the server uses a "software mechanism" that meters usage and locks out those concurrent users in excess of the legal number of licensed copies owned.

Macintosh
On the Macintosh platform, AppleShare 3.0 file server software is available from Apple through authorized dealers. Other concurrent use meter options include KeyServer by Sassafras Software, (603) 643-3351 and Quota from Proteus Technology, (403) 448-1970.

To install a Claris application on a Macintosh server for multi-launching, do an Easy Install. Then move the Claris folder from the System folder of the server to the folder that holds the Claris application. Instruct users to copy the Claris folder to their own System folder so that they can use the help, translation, and spelling features. They will only need to do this once. Ensure that you enable the copy protection and concurrent use limit using whatever software mechanism you chose from the list above.

Note: Launching a server-based application may result in a crash at the point of the splash screen display, if the workstation is running a 68040 microprocessor. Apple Computer is aware of the problem, and is distributing a system extension named Network Launch Fix, version 1.0, that corrects the problem. This problem only applies to 68040 computers.

Windows
Concurrent use software mechanisms on the Windows platform include Site Lock from Brightworks Software, 908-530-9650, and App Meter which is available from Funk Software, 617-497-6339. Ask your computer reseller about other options you may have in this software category.
