NOTE: This is not an issue with ClarisWorks 2.0 since it has a Painting environment.
Q: I bought some MacPaint (bit-map) clip art to use with ClarisWorks 1.0 but when I insert or open the document, I get the whole page with no way to select only the art I want.
A: Clip Art generally comes in one-page documents with several pieces of art per page. ClarisWorks 1.0 imports graphics as one object and does not have the ability to edit bit-maps.
There are 3 alternatives:
1. Purchase the upgrade to ClarisWorks 2.0
2. If you have a Paint program such as BrushStrokes, Canvas, SuperPaint, MacPaint, or PixelPaint use it to open the clip art and lasso only the part you want. Copy it to the clipboard. Then in ClarisWorks, you can Paste it in and treat it as a graphic object, scaling it, duplicating it, etc.
3. If you do NOT have a Painting program, here is how you can use HyperCard (Development version 2.0 or later).
1. Launch the HyperCard program.
2. Under File, choose New Stack. Do NOT "Copy Current Background."
3. Set the size of the new stack to MacPaint in the pop down menu. Name the new stack something like HyperClipArt for later use.
4. You are now in a new, blank stack. Under Go, select Message and type into the message box that appears: set userLevel to 3 and press Return
5. From the Tools menu, select the lasso tool (to the left of the pencil).
6. Choose Import Paint... from the File menu and navigate to your clip art file. Then click Open.
This creates a new card in your stack with the clipart on it. You can move to the bottom of the page by grabbing the page through the little Scroll window that has appeared (or, if it has not, select Scroll from the Go menu) You can now use the lasso to select just the image you want. Copy it, switch to ClarisWorks and Paste.
