Claris Windows applications by default save data files in the subdirectory where the program resides. For example, FileMaker Pro files are usually saved in C:\\FMPRO and ClarisWorks files are usually saved in C:\\CLWORKS.
You can use Windows' Program Manager to change the default sub-directory for your data files. If you do not yet have a subdirectory set up, use the File Manager to create one. Then, select the application's icon from the Program Manager and choose Properties from the File menu. Change the Working Directory to the name of an existing subdirectory on your hard disk or a network drive.
To change the default directory using Norton Desktop for Windows, select the application's icon from Norton Desktop. Choose Properties from the File menu and click the Options button. Change the Startup Directory to the name of an existing directory on your hard disk or a network drive.
IMPORTANT! If you are using ClarisWorks 3.0 and change the working directory, it becomes necessary to move your Assistant files to that working directory. To do so, go to the File Manager icon Windows and find the Claris directory in the Windows Directory. Click once on the Claris directory with your mouse (to select it), and then select Move from the File menu. Now type in the working directory location for example: D:\\USERS\\MFLYNN. Doing this will move the Claris directory and all it's files to your working directory. After you complete the move of the Claris directory, it is necessary to edit the CLARIS.INI file so that your Claris applications are aware of the Claris directory's new location.
To edit the CLARIS.INI file, select Run from the File menu (still in File Manager). In the command line box type over whatever appears and type in : CLARIS.INI and click on the OK button. Notepad will open and you will see the CLARIS.INI file. Scroll down to the section labeled [CLARIS]. In this section find the line that says: Claris Directory = C:\\WINDOWS\\CLARIS. Highlight with your mouse C:\\WINDOWS\\CLARIS and type in your new working directory, ex: Claris Directory = D:\\USERS\\MFLYNN\\CLARIS. Now your Claris applications will have a pointer to the proper location of the Claris directory, and all you assistants will be found when they are called for.
