In certain fonts, there are certain special characters that are accessed by holding down the Control Key along with another key. For example: Choosing the Chicago font and typing "Control q" should type the "propeller" or "daisy" symbol that appears on the Command Key.
This does not work in a ClarisWorks Word Processing or Paint document. Instead either nothing appears or the correct key is replaced by a space. If the desired keystroke is done in KeyCaps, and then copied and pasted into ClarisWorks, the result is the same.
However, typing "Control q" in Chicago font DOES work in the Spreadsheet environment.
Here is a way to get the character into a Word Processing or Paint document:
1. In a spreadsheet or a spreadsheet frame, click on a cell and set the font to Chicago.
2. Set the Size to 48 (24 if you are using an ImageWriter) and set the Row Height to 60.
3. Now in the cell, type Control Q. This gives you the quadrille character.
4. Snapshot the screen by pressing Shift-Command 3.
5. Switch over to the Finder and double click the Picture 1 file you just created.
(Under System 7, this will use TeachText to open the picture. System 6 will require a paint program.)
6. Drag a selection rectangle around only the large quadrille character, and type Command-C to Copy.
7. Now switch back to ClarisWorks and open a new Graphics document.
8. Paste. Then under Options, choose Scale Selection and set each direction's reduction to 25% (50% if you are using an ImageWriter).
9. Click on to select and then Copy the resultant graphic.
10. Now return to your original Word Processing document, and paste the quadrille in wherever you need it.
Since the quadrille or "propeller" Command symbol was created four times larger, it prints at a higher resolution.
You can Copy it into your scrapbook for use in future documents.
