ClarisWorks: Rows or Columns Missing

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
In all versions of ClarisWorks, it is possible to resize the columns or rows so that they are not visible on-screen, giving the impression that the cells have been deleted. This is especially difficult to diagnose if a number of columns or rows were selected at the time that they were resized, because it might appear that column F in the spreadsheet is next to column C or that row 20 is immediately below row 10.

This is an excellent feature. You might want to have spreadsheet data which is entered into columns, but which does not print, or you might want to have spreadsheet cells collapsed so that they do not take up room on the screen when working with a large spreadsheet. Because the data entry in these cells remains intact, and because the calculations in the collapsed cells still calculate, you can have a huge amount of functionality 'hidden' in this way.

To restore the spreadsheet to its original display, you can use the Select All command and enter the Column Width dialog or the Row Height dialog and click the checkbox next to Use Default. This will restore all of the columns in the spreadsheet to their default width, but sometimes there is a lot of design work which has been invested in the display. To return only a range of cells to their original display, without changing the whole spreadsheet back to the default, you would have to select the affected range and make the appropriate adjustment.

In the example above, select columns C and F, then choose Column Width with Use Default to make columns D and E appear. Select rows 10 and 20 then choose Row Height with Use Default to make rows 11 through 19 appear.
