Irregular Text Wrap Around Bitmapped Graphics

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
ClarisWorks and ClarisImpact can do an irregular text wrap around objects created with ClarisWorks or ClarisImpact draw tools. It can also do this with object-oriented PICT images you Insert, but only after ungrouping the object. The Ungroup command is in the Arrange menu.

If you apply the irregular text wrap option to other kinds of images (any paint frame, EPSF, TIFF or bitmapped PICT), the text will wrap only to the edge of the picture's frame, and not the boundaries of the image.

If you would like to wrap text around these other kinds of images, here's how you can do it:

1. Bring the image into your document.

- If you have an object-oriented EPSF image:
a. Select the arrow tool
b. Choose Insert from the File menu to open the image.

- If you are using a bitmap image with ClarisWorks (paint frame, TIFF, bitmap EPSF or bitmap PICT):
a. Create a Paint frame.
b. Choose Insert from the File menu to open the image. It is placed inside the paint frame.
c. Choose the arrow tool.

d. Set the paint frame border and fill to none. This makes the background of these images transparent.

- If you are using a bitmap image with ClarisImpact (paint frame, TIFF, bitmap EPSF or bitmap PICT):
a. Choose Place File... from the File menu.

2. Outline the boundaries of the image with the polygon, bezigon, or freehand tool.
3. Choose Move to Back from the Arrange menu.
4. Set the fill of the object from step 2 to white and the pen to none.
5. Choose Text Wrap from the Options menu (Text menu in ClarisImpact). Set the wrap to Irregular.

ClarisWorks and ClarisImpact will now wrap around the invisible object that you created in step 2 but will appear to wrap around the picture referred to in step 1.

MacWrite Pro allows irregular text wrap around all types of graphics without any workaround. Also, irregular wrap around inserted PICTs does not work until the object is ungrouped.

NOTE: if this solution does not work check to make sure text wrap has been turned off on the object described in step 1.
