Smart Quotes Cause Bad Formula Message (DB)

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
When creating a Match Records formula or defining a calculation field in ClarisWorks, you will get a "Bad Formula" message if you use smart quotes instead of regular quotes. Using smart quotes in a FileMaker calculation formula will cause the alert: "This field can't be found."

An extension called Smart Key automatically substitutes smart quotes, also known as curly quotes, for regular ones as you type. Turn off or disable this extension before defining fields or using Match Records.
