Opening 1.0 Communications Documents in 2.0 (CM)

After installing ClarisWorks 2.0, opening a ClarisWorks 1.0 communications document set to use the Apple Modem Tool deletes the phone number and results in an error message.

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.

After upgrading to ClarisWorks 2.0, when opening ClarisWorks 1.0 Communications documents which have the Apple Modem Tool as the selected Connection tool, you will get the message: "Could not configure connection tool." The document will open, but the phone number will be missing.

Explanation:
ClarisWorks 2.0 automatically updates the Apple Modem Tool to Version 1.1.1. The new tool does not properly open old ClarisWorks documents. Trying to open up the documents with ClarisWorks 1.0 will result in the same error message.

Solutions:

A. Reenter the phone number, check the other settings and save the converted document.

B. Replace the new Apple Modem Tool (in the Extensions Folder in the System Folder) with the older tool from the ClarisWorks Communications Folder on the ClarisWorks 1.0 Communications Disk. This is not recommended since the new tool contains enhancements.
