Greater Zoom % Required for Accurate Display at Resolutions above 72 dpi (PT)

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
Pixels in a 72 dpi Paint document or frame are displayed very accurately since most Macintosh monitors have a 72 dpi resolution. For Paint documents with greater resolutions, ClarisWorks can only approximate the display of the pixels.

Increasing the resolution of a paint Document/Frame decreases the size of the drawing area and the images contained in that drawing area. Basically, each pixel is reduced in size. Since most screens only display 72 dpi it is necessary to increase the zoom level to 200% or greater to accurately place higher resolution pixels. In general, greater resolutions require greater Zoom percentages.

Here is an easy example to help understand the issue:
1. Open a new Word Processing document
2. Create a Paint frame
3. Set the Paint frame to 144 dpi resolution
4. Use the Pencil or Line tool to draw a horizontal line all the way across the frame
5. Increase the Zoom until you can see that the line does not actually reach the edge of the frame

Now try the same scenario but Zoom to 200% before drawing the line across the frame. This time you will be able to draw the line all the way across the frame.

Resolutions and recommended Zoom percentages:
72 dpi ---> 100% Zoom
144 dpi ---> at least 200% Zoom
288 dpi ---> at least 400% Zoom
300 dpi ---> at least 800% Zoom
360 dpi ---> at least 800% Zoom
