Trading SYLK files with Excel Causes an Out of Memory Error in Excel (SS)

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
When transferring SYLK files between Excel 4.0 and ClarisWorks, there exists a situation where Excel will get an out of memory error message.

To reproduce:

1) Create a simple spread sheet in ClarisWorks 1.0 or 2.0 with a couple cells, and then export it out as SYLK. Call this file "F1".

2) Open "F1" in Excel 4.0. Then save the Excel file out as SYLK. Call this file "F2".

3) Open the "F2" file in CW and then save it out one more time as SYLK. Call this file "F3".

4) Open "F3" in Excel. You will get an out of memory error message.

SOLUTION
To work around this problem, use Excel 3.0 as the file type by which you transfer files between ClarisWorks and Excel 4.0.
