If the error message "Out of Memory when importing document" appears when importing a document, the memory reserved for the application may not be large enough to accommodate the imported file. Generally this error message occurs with large TIFF or PICT images, though it can occur with any large file. Here's how to increase the application's memory allocation:
1. Quit the Application and return to the Finder.
2. Go to the actual application program icon (not a document created in the application) and click once to select it.
3. From the File menu, select Get Info.
4. Increase the memory in the Application Memory Size box at the bottom of the Get Info window. If you are using System 7.1, increase the Preferred Size. Increasing memory by 500, to 1000K, should be enough to import most images. The more color depth and the larger the image, the more memory will need to be increased.
Sometimes, increasing memory allocation will not fix the problem. The next step is to find the file "XTND Translator List" and delete it. Generally, this file is kept in the System folder in the Preferences folder, though it may also be in the Claris or Extensions folders, or in the System Folder itself. This file is used by the Claris XTND system as an index to where all the file translators are located, and it might be corrupted. Deleting forces a fresh, clean XTND Translator List to be built.
If deleting the XTND Translator List does not solve the problem, reinstall the Claris XTND system and the Claris Translators. Both of these files should be installed in the Claris folder in the System Folder.
