Virus Detection Software
The Updater makes several changes to the resources in ClarisWorks. Many virus utilities consider this activity improper and may try to prevent it. To avoid this inconvenience, disable all virus detection software and restart your Macintosh before applying the update.
Hard Disk Space
For this installation to be successful, be sure that you have at least 1MB of free disk space.
Part I: Updating the Application
1. Double click on the ClarisWorks 1.0v4 Updater icon.
2. Click OK.
3. The Updater will attempt to find your copy of ClarisWorks. If the Updater fails to find it, you will need to locate and select your current version of ClarisWorks.
4. Click Update.
5. You will then get a status bar showing ClarisWorks is being updated. When it has finished, you will get a dialog that indicates a successful update. Click OK to continue.
6. From the desktop, go to the folder that contains ClarisWorks. You will find your original program and the new version which will be labeled ClarisWorks 1.0v4.
7. To ensure the updater worked correctly, double click on the new ClarisWorks application. If successful, quit ClarisWorks and return to the Finder.
8. Place your original version of ClarisWorks in the Trash and choose Empty Trash from the Special menu in the Finder.
Part II: Updating the Translators
ClarisWorks uses a special file, ClarisWorks Translators. Because this file changes with each version, you will need to update your existing ClarisWorks Translators file. To replace this file follow these steps:
1. Open the System Folder on your hard disk.
2. Locate and Open the Claris folder.
3. Copy the new ClarisWorks Translators file from the updater diskette into the Claris folder; respond OK when asked whether to Replace the existing file. Note: be sure not to copy this file into the Claris Translators folder. If you do, the import/export capability will not work.
4. The standard installation of ClarisWorks places the ClarisWorks Translators file in the Claris folder. If you have done a custom installation, this file will either be in the System Folder or in the same folder as ClarisWorks. If this is the case, locate the file and replace as directed.
5. Close all of your folders.
Congratulations, you've successfully updated to 1.0v4!
Exchanging files between ClarisWorks Macintosh and Windows
Using Diskettes-
To successfully exchange files between Macintosh and Windows you need to be aware of a few issues. If you plan to exchange files via diskette, your Macintosh must be equipped with a Superdrive (FDHD). You must also have one of the following software programs: Apple File Exchange, Access PC, DOS Mounter or PC Exchange (Apple File Exchange is included with every Macintosh whereas the other software packages mentioned must be purchased separately). Refer to the manual included with these programs for questions regarding their operation.
Naming Files-
When moving from Windows to Mac or Mac to Windows your file name must have a .CWK or .CWS extension. In addition, when moving from Mac to Windows you must follow DOS naming conventions and use only eight characters in your file name or it will be truncated to eight characters.
Opening Files-
Once your file has been transferred onto your hard drive, you will be able to open the file by using one of two methods. The first method is to open the file from within ClarisWorks by using the Open command from the File menu. The second method is to Drop Launch the file (System 7 required) from the Finder. To Drop Launch, select the file you want to open and drag it on top of the ClarisWorks application icon. When you release the mouse button, ClarisWorks will automatically open the file. This method will also opens multiple files simultaneously.
Because of the operating system differences between the Mac and Windows platforms, you will not be able to open ClarisWorks Windows files on your Mac by double clicking on them. Instead, use one of the methods listed above. Once you have opened the file and saved it on your Mac hard drive, as a ClarisWorks Mac file, you will be able to double click the file to open it.

ClarisWorks License Agreement
The enclosed UpdateMaker updater program is ©1992 by AD Instruments, Inc. Suite H, 2251 Grant Rd., Los Altos, CA 92024.
The software code changes contained within the Updater, the original software, and the software created by the updater program are © 1991-1993 Claris Corporation. All Rights Reserved. Claris and ClarisWorks are registered trademarks of Claris Corporation. All other trademarks are property of their respective owners.
The following license agreement applies:
PLEASE READ THIS DOCUMENT CAREFULLY PRIOR TO USING THIS SOFTWARE.
The enclosed computer program is an update (the "Update") to ClarisWorks 1.0 (the "Software"). In order to use and/or copy the Update as authorized by this License, you must have validly licensed at least one copy of the Software. You are required to have a validly licensed copy of the Software for each copy of the Update made hereunder. The Update and the copies authorized herein replace your validly licensed copies of the Software and are not additional copies (i.e., you may not use the Update in addition to the Software the Update is replacing).
The Update is licensed, not sold, to you by Claris Corporation ("Claris") for use only under the terms of this License, and Claris reserves any rights not expressly granted to you. You own the disk(s) on which the Update is recorded or fixed, but Claris and its licensers retain ownership of the Update itself.
1. License. This License allows you to (i) make copies of the Update, only up to the number of validly licensed copies of the Software in your possession and (ii) use each such authorized copy on a single computer at a time. You are required to have a validly licensed copy of the Software for each copy of the Update made hereunder. The Update and the copies authorized herein replace your validly licensed copies of the Software and are not additional copies. To "use" the Update means that the Update is either loaded in the temporary memory (i.e., RAM) of a computer or installed on the permanent memory of a computer (i.e., hard disk, CD ROM, etc.). You may use at one time as many copies of the Update as you have licenses for. You may install the Update on a common storage device shared by multiple computers, provided that if you have more computers having access to the common storage device than the number of licensed copies of the Update, you must have some software mechanism which locks-out any concurrent users in excess of the number of licensed copies of the Update (an additional License is not needed for the one copy of the Update stored on the common storage device accessed by multiple computers). If the Update is installed on the permanent memory of a single desktop computer (i.e., not a storage device shared by multiple computers) and that desktop computer is used by one individual for at least 80% of the time the computer is in use, that same individual may also use a copy of the Update on a portable or home computer.
The Update is protected by copyright law. As an express condition of this License, you must reproduce on each copy the Claris copyright notice and any other proprietary legends that were on the original copy supplied by Claris.
You may permanently transfer all your rights under this License to another party by providing to such party all copies of the Update licensed under this License, and the Software the Update replaces, together with a copy of this License and all written materials accompanying the Update, provided that the other party reads and agrees to accept the terms and conditions of this License.
2. Restrictions. The Update contains trade secrets in its human perceivable form and, to protect them, you may not REVERSE ENGINEER, DECOMPILE, DISASSEMBLE, OR OTHERWISE REDUCE THE UPDATE TO ANY HUMAN PERCEIVABLE FORM. YOU MAY NOT MODIFY, ADAPT, TRANSLATE, RENT, LEASE, LOAN, RESELL FOR PROFIT, OR CREATE DERIVATIVE WORKS BASED UPON THE UPDATE OR ANY PART THEREOF.
3. Termination. This License is effective until terminated. This License will terminate immediately without notice from Claris or judicial resolution if you fail to comply with any provision of this License. Upon such termination you must destroy the Update, all accompanying written materials, and all copies thereof. You may also terminate this License at any time by destroying the Update, all accompanying written materials and all copies thereof.
4. Export Law Assurances. You agree that neither the Update nor any direct product thereof is being or will be shipped, transferred or reexported, directly or indirectly, into any country prohibited by the United States Export Administration Act and the regulations thereunder or will be used for any purpose prohibited by the Act.
5. Limited Warranty and Disclaimer, Limitation of Remedies and Damages. YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE UPDATE MAY NOT SATISFY ALL YOUR REQUIREMENTS OR BE FREE FROM DEFECTS. CLARIS WARRANTS THE DISKETTES ON WHICH THE UPDATE IS RECORDED TO BE FREE FROM DEFECTS IN MATERIALS AND WORKMANSHIP UNDER NORMAL USE FOR 90 DAYS FROM PURCHASE, BUT THE UPDATE AND ACCOMPANYING WRITTEN MATERIALS ARE LICENSED "AS IS." ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES AND CONDITIONS (INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE) ARE DISCLAIMED AS TO THE UPDATE AND ACCOMPANYING WRITTEN MATERIALS AND LIMITED TO 90 DAYS AS TO THE DISKETTES. YOUR EXCLUSIVE REMEDY FOR BREACH OF WARRANTY WILL BE THE REPLACEMENT OF THE DISKETTES OR REFUND OF THE PURCHASE PRICE. IN NO EVENT WILL CLARIS OR ITS DEVELOPERS, DIRECTORS, OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES OR AFFILIATES BE LIABLE TO YOU FOR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL OR INDIRECT DAMAGES (INCLUDING DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF BUSINESS INFORMATION, AND THE LIKE), WHETHER FORESEEABLE OR UNFORESEEABLE, ARISING OUT OF THE USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE UPDATE OR ACCOMPANYING WRITTEN MATERIALS, REGARDLESS OF THE BASIS OF THE CLAIM AND EVEN IF CLARIS OR AN AUTHORIZED CLARIS REPRESENTATIVE HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
Claris' liability to you for actual damages for any cause whatsoever, and regardless of the form of the action, will be limited to the greater of $500 or the money paid for the Update that caused the damages.
THE ABOVE LIMITATIONS WILL NOT APPLY IN CASE OF PERSONAL INJURY ONLY WHERE AND TO THE EXTENT THAT APPLICABLE LAW REQUIRES SUCH LIABILITY. BECAUSE SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF IMPLIED WARRANTIES OR LIABILITY FOR CONSEQUENTIAL OR INCIDENTAL DAMAGES, THE ABOVE LIMITATIONS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.
6. General. This License will be construed under the laws of the State of California, except for that body of law dealing with conflicts of law. If any provision of this License shall be held by a court of competent jurisdiction to be contrary to law, that provision will be enforced to the maximum extent permissible, and the remaining provisions of this License will remain in full force and effect. If you are a U.S. Government end-user, this License of the Update conveys only "RESTRICTED RIGHTS," and its use, disclosure and duplication are subject to Federal Acquisition Regulations, 52.227-7013 (c) (1) (ii). (See the U.S. Government Restricted provision in the user manual.)
