Help System Cannot be Opened (All)

This is a portion of an article that originally appeared in the ClarisWorks Journal, the monthly publication of the ClarisWorks Users Group, Box 701010, Plymouth, MI 48170; (313) 454-1969; Fax: (313) 454-1965. Copyright ClarisWorks Users Group; reprinted with permission.

Q. The ClarisWorks manual suggests that the program offers a help system. Yet every time I select "Help..." under the Apple Menu I get the message "Sorry, the Help stack cannot be opened." Why do I get this message?

A. The help system requires approximately 225K of free memory. If your system has less than 225K of memory available after you launch ClarisWorks, you get a message that says you cannot open the Help stack.

If you want to use the help system and don't want to add memory to your computer, follow these steps to reduce the amount of memory allocated to ClarisWorks:

1. Quit ClarisWorks and return to the Finder.

2. Navigate to the ClarisWorks Icon. Click on the Icon and choose "Get Info" from the File Menu (or press Command-I). The Get Info Window will appear. (See Figure 1.)

3. Set the Application Memory Size to a value 100K less than the present value (in this case, set the Application Memory Size to 800).

4. Click on the Close Box to close the Get Info Box.

5. Relaunch ClarisWorks and see if you can run the help system.

If not, repeat steps #1 through #5 until you access ClarisWorks' help system.
